FRI Peer Mentors
FRI Peer Mentors are upper-level undergraduates who are engaged in their Research Stream and are interested in supporting new students to master laboratory skills and to adjust to the intellectual demands of research.
FRI Peer Mentor Eligibility
- Completed the FRI two semester course sequence.
- Received training provided by the FRI Peer Mentoring Program.
- Be available to spend up to 9 hours per week mentoring FRI students to earn course credit. Paid/volunteer mentor hours arranged with RE.
The Peer Mentor application for the upcoming semester opens at the end of each current semester. For more details, please contact your Research Educator.
Peer Mentor Role Information
Compensation
Peer Mentors are either paid an hourly wage, earn course credit, or volunteer credit for mentoring.
Required Training
In order to serve as a Peer Mentor in the FRI, you must complete FRI mentor training. Upon hiring, you will be asked to enroll in a training session in December or January, and complete a brief on-line training course.
Application
The next deadline to apply will be in November, 2025.
Peer Mentor Compensation & Expectations
Specific expectations for peer mentors are provided by the Research Educator for the stream you will mentor for. Each peer mentor receives one of the compensation options below for a semester mentor position.
NSC321 Peer Teaching (3 Credit Hours)
- ≤ 9 hrs/week mentor tasks and expectations arranged with your Research Educator.
- End of semester reflective essay.
- RE evaluation of mentoring.
*students may only enroll in 6 TOTAL hours of peer teaching course credit (course can be taken twice for a grade).
BIO372C Peer Teaching with Ethics Flag (3 Credit Hours)
- ≤ 9 hrs/week. Mentor tasks and expectations arranged with your Research Educator.
- End of semester reflective essay.
- RE evaluation of mentoring.
*students may only enroll in 6 TOTAL hours of peer teaching course credit (course can be taken twice for a grade).
Research Mentor Course (3 Credit Hours)

- Enrollment only for students engaging in research in the stream during the semester
- Summary of research completed during semester required to receive a grade.
** students may only enroll in 6 TOTAL hours of research credit across all departments
Research Mentor Course (2 Credit Hours)

- Enrollment only for students engaging in research in the stream during the semester
- Summary of research completed during semester required to receive a grade.

Volunteer Mentor Course - (1 Credit Hour)
- Mentor hours, tasks, and expectations arranged with your Research Educator.
- Enrollment in NSC108 (1 credit hour course)
Paid Mentors
- Receive an hourly wage.
- Students MUST be registered for at least 12 credit hours to be eligible.
- Mentor hours, tasks, and expectations arranged with your Research Educator.
